Squiddy Squid vs. Sharky Shark

(This is a repost of a blog entry I did for the Lill St Textiles blog! Which you should probably read because the faculty members there are all awesome! Anyway- enjoy!)

Halloween is right around the corner and, it being the high holy days of our home studio (The Burrow), my roommate and I have been hard at work creating our costumes!

I decided to multi-task and also prep for my upcoming Hoodie Class (look for it in the Early Winter schedule- available soon!), so the costumes are based on a basic pattern for a hooded sweatshirt. Loosely based:

Lucy's going to be a squid!

(People seem to really like how it turned out. Check out the squid costume on the web! On BoingBoing, Super Punch, and Lucy's flickr stream.)

I am going to be a Hammerhead Shark! My costume is based on the same sweatshirt pattern: with a few alterations...

Fins!

Oh man- these costumes are so cozy to wear! They're basically a hybrid between comfy sweatshirts and giant stuffed animals!

Sewing is awesome. Are any of you working on stellar halloween costumes? Let's see 'em!

These costumes rock my world. They are amazing! I was waondering what pattern did you use for a base? If I was going to attempt somthing similar would you have any tips? Obviously not a shark or a squid, a differnt creature.

@bookbaker The costumes are based on a basic hooded sweatshirt pattern that I derived from a thrift store hoodie! All of the structural details were then sketched out as the pattern was being translated from the garment to the pattern paper. Good luck!

Hi! I just found this after emailing Lucy about the squid costume I saw in the flickr stream. Amazing work!! My six year old son completely freaked when he saw it and wants me to make the exact same thing. I will give your suggestion a try on recreating a sweatshirt hoody. But until then, may I suggest you make a pattern and sell it on etsy so parents like me can just make it from your genius. So amazing. I tip my tentacle to you!!

Hi, I hope this is alright. But I ended up making a red squid costume just like yours. I wrote about in on my blog. Thanks for the inspiration, my son absolutely loved his costume.

I'm a big fan of your work and your collaborations in the burrow studio. Thanks for all of the free inspiration! I've been a fan for a long time, and only found out a while back that we are both chicagoans!

I stumbled onto this trying to find ideas for my daughter's costume. Did you ever post a tutorial or pattern for the hammerhead shark costume?
